Step into three separate eras of history at Yesterfest, 2010, April 24 from 9:00 am
to 5:00 pm! Bastrop celebrates its past defining the pioneer days, the jazz era,
and the rockabilly time of post-war innocence through music, costume,
reenactments and just plain entertainment. The public is invited to come and
encouraged to dress for a favorite time period. A costume contest will reward the
winners in all three era categories.
The Pioneers on South Main will host trick ropers, gunfighters, saloon girls,
Native American Dancers and Chuck Wagon Cooking. We are sure that there will
be gunfights at the old Saloon, a probable train-robbery of the miniature train
running from the Children’s area, and that the Indians will be dancing for rain or
sunshine, whichever is needed. Visitors can enjoy the music of the era on the
stage located in front of City Hall, and can watch the telling of the Wilbarger and
Manlove stories presented by members of the Bastrop Historical Society.
In memory of the great Runaway Scrape during the Texas War for Independence
where, after the fall of the Alamo, the women and children left at home while
their men were fighting the various battles had to leave their homes and stay
ahead of the advancing Mexican army, Bastrop is creating the first Runaway
Scrape foot race. Runners will start at North Main and Spring, run down to
Fisherman’s Park then along the river Walk on the banks of the Colorado River
and end back up on South Main. There will be prizes for the winners. Participants
in costume will be given a head-start handicap.

Don’t miss the opportunity to get your Bastrop Certificate for Spitting off the Bridge. A time-honored tradition with
certification held by a select few, Bridge Spitting is known to increase circulation and breath control. One wonders
what long-term effects the practice will provide to this years’ spittees.
The Jazz Era on North Main will have music to please all since the time encompasses jazz, gospel and the blues.
Bonnie and Clyde (who were reputedly in Bastrop, but did not rob the bank) will be available with authentic
memorabilia to finally rob the old bank. Don’t miss the reenactments, Bonnie’s will, g-men and flappers as they hang
out in front of the Speak-Easy, and the Bastrop Historical Society’s presentation of vignettes from Bastrop’s Jazz Age.
Rockabilly is the theme of Spring Street, with 50’s cars parked at the drive-in waiting for their vanilla cream cokes
while the Sonic Skaters deliver ice cream from the Opera House. Listen or dance to period music from swing to bop
to rock-and-roll and watch the D’Ette and Company tap dancers or join in to learn the Swing, or participate in the sock
hop. Try the hula-hoop contest in front of the Opera House, Daddy’O, and hear the stories of Bastrop’s experiences
during the post-war days.
Continue your “Rock-a-Billy” day by attending the Bastrop Opera House performance of “Forever…Patsy”, a play
starring Terry Moore as Patsy Cline at 7:30 pm. Don’t miss this thrilling performance.
While all eras will be wonderful family entertainment, children will want to visit the Children’s Area at the County
Courthouse where there will be animal displays from McKinney Roughs, the Fry’s Fun Farm petting zoo and pony
rides, MJ’s Traveling Train rides, Boy Scout Troop 181 pine car derby races and beadwork and halos made by the
representatives of Children’s Advocacy.
